Skylight Protection Systems

Permanent and Temporary Protection for Rooftop Skylights

Skylights can create serious fall hazards when workers access rooftops for maintenance, inspections, repairs or solar-panel work. Most skylights should not be assumed to support the impact of a worker falling or stepping onto the surface.

CH Bull offers fixed skylight screens, non-penetrating skylight guardrails and temporary netting systems for existing skylights and roof openings. The right solution depends on the skylight dimensions, roof conditions, work being performed and whether protection is needed permanently or for a specific project.

Safety Snapshot: BLS data identified 37 fatal occupational injuries involving skylights or other existing roof openings in 2023 and 31 in 2024. Private industry also had 110 nonfatal cases involving days away from work across 2023–2024.

Not sure which skylight protection system fits your project?

CH Bull can review the skylight type, dimensions, roof conditions and work being performed to help identify the right permanent or temporary solution.

Why Corrugated Roof Skylights Are Especially Hazardous

Corrugated roof skylights can be difficult to recognize because they follow the roof profile and may blend into the surrounding metal panels, especially when covered by dust, dirt or weathering. Although they may look like part of the roof, these lightweight fiberglass panels can fail under a person’s weight.

Properly fitted skylight screens create a protective barrier that helps prevent falls while still allowing natural light into the building.

Common Questions

Skylights are treated as roof openings when a worker could fall through them. Federal construction standards require protection through personal fall-arrest equipment, covers or guardrails when the skylight is more than six feet above a lower level.

A skylight screen is generally installed over the skylight as a fixed physical barrier.

Temporary netting is commonly used during construction, reroofing, skylight replacement and other projects where the opening or work conditions may change.

Yes. The featured Garlock, Tractel and Safety Rail Company screens use compression-fit, clamp-based or frame-supported installation methods that do not require drilling through the roof surface.

Temporary nets may be considered during:

  • New construction
  • Roof replacement
  • Temporary skylight removal
  • Skylight replacement
  • Maintenance projects involving open roof areas
  • Work requiring protection to move between locations

Yes. California requirements state that skylight nets must receive a weekly inspection by a competent person and a daily visual inspection by a trained, authorized person before the net is relied upon for fall protection. Manufacturer instructions, training and rescue procedures must also be followed.

A screen creates a physical barrier directly over the skylight. A guardrail surrounds the opening and keeps workers away from the skylight. The available roof space and work activity can help determine which approach is more practical.

Only when documentation confirms that it meets the applicable strength requirements. A skylight should not be assumed to support a worker simply because it appears solid.

The open-grid construction allows daylight to continue passing through while placing a physical barrier over the skylight.

Corrugated skylights follow the shape of the surrounding roof and can become difficult to see when covered with dust or weathering. Because the fiberglass panels are not designed to support a person’s weight, an unprotected skylight can present a serious fall-through hazard.

Helpful measurements include:

  • Skylight width and length
  • Dome height
  • Frame or curb dimensions
  • Skylight shape
  • Photos from multiple angles
  • Nearby equipment or obstructions
  • What information does CH Bull need to recommend a system?

Helpful information includes:

  • Whether protection is permanent or temporary
  • Skylight type and dimensions
  • Number of skylights
  • Roof type and condition
  • Work being performed
  • Project duration
  • Photos or drawings
  • Building and project location
